About KP Karunakaran
I am a documentary and street photographer based in Sydney, Australia.
My association with photography started as a teenager growing up in Madras, a city in southern India. I would help my father with odd jobs in our make shift photo lab which was a dingy storage area in the corner of our modest home that doubled up as a "darkroom" when needed.
Occasionally, when he was pleased with my work, I was given the privilege of executing the final step in the photographic process. The memory of gently rocking a white porcelain tray and watching pictures come to life on paper immersed in a bath of chemicals, as if by sheer magic, is forever etched in my brain.
My father was tragically killed in a plane crash when I was a teenager, and my emotional connection with photography was abruptly severed. The memories remained however, and I have in more recent years, channeled the love of photography into 'telling stories with pictures'. Here is a selection.
